Svartisen glacier
The blue-green snout of Norway’s second-largest glacier Engenbreen is an impressive
sight, stretching all the way down from the mountain massif on the southern side of
Holandsfjorden. You can reach the glacier by shuttle boat across Holandsfjorden - from
Holand or Braset.
The Svartisen poppy - "Papaver Radicatum Subglobosum" - is the motive for
Mely’s coat of arms. This protected flower is found in the wild only in the area
around the glacier, and with a bit of luck you may spot it. In some years it grows just
above lake Engenbrevannet, but mostly it is found at an altitude of 9,00-1,000 m above sea
level.
Power plant
If you continue north from Svartisen will arrive at Kilvik where a new power station,
Svartisen Kraftverk (1993), is situated 900 m inside the mountain. Having driven through
the 7.6 km long Svartisen tunnel, turning at the junction of the Fykan tunnel, you arrive
at Glomfjord’s old power station (1920). From here there are guided tours every
weekday during the summer season.
Rock carvings
At Fykanbergan (Glomfjord) and my there are two large sites with rock carvings dating
back to the early Stone Age - ca. 8,000-9,000 years.
Museums
The company Hydro has its own industry museum in Glomfjord. Mely heritage museum is
situated at de, Reip. Contact the tourist office for information about opening hours.
Glomfjord
This industrial community has a number of services, including post office, bank, travel
agency, hotel, shops, pharmacy and petrol station. In winter, Glomfjord is a paradise for
skiing enthusiasts. Ski lifts will take you up into the mountains.
Fjellveien mountain road
You can reach the Glomfjord mountains by turning off Rv 17 between the Fykan and Svartisen
tunnels and driving the 9 km to Namnlaushgda. From here there are sign-posted hiking
routes. Great terrain for hiking, several lakes for fishing and excellent caves! A more
challenging route to the mountains is the old railway labourers’ path
(Rallarmarsj-stien) from Fykanbergan past the rock carvings to the Nedre Navervann lake,
where there are stairs (1,129 steps) to Fykan. Alternatively, you can continue to
Namnlaushgda.
rnes
Services such as post office, bank, petrol station, shops, hotel and pharmacy are
available in the centre of rnes. The Coastal Express (Hurtigruten) and a fast ferry call
daily. Ferries to Melya, Bolga and Sttt, while Grny and my can be reached via
bridges. The pine tree on the front of Nitedal’s matchboxes was originally found on
Grny by the painter Torolf Holmboe.
Gateway to Svartisen glacier
The new information centre is situated on Rv 17 at Holand, near the terminal for the
shuttle boat to the glacier. In addition to the tourist information office, the centre
also has toilets, emptying facilities for chemical toilets, a large picnic area and a
sculpture, "the Glacier Gateway".
Cyclists, please note!
You cannot cycle through the Svartisen tunnel. Take the ferry from rnes to Vassdalsvik.
